ENQA meeting with U.S. Regional Accreditation Commissions

11 September 2005-12 September 2005 00:00

On 11-12 September 2005, ENQA met for the first time with the leadership of the seven regional accreditation organisations of the United States. This meeting was initiated by both ENQA and the U.S. Regional Accreditation Commissions (CRAC), respectively, and it reflected the need to exchange views regarding the most recent developments in the field of higher education quality assurance in Europe and the United States.

ENQA, represented by most members of its Board, briefed the American colleagues on the past and future work related to the European Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in the European Higher Education Area and on the planning regarding the European register of quality assurance agencies operating in Europe, among other things. CRAC representatives introduced the principles and procedures behind the cooperation within the CRAC framework and discussed the current quality assurance developments in the United States.

Among other items of joint discussion with regard to quality assurance were cross-border and distance education, European and American perspectives on the European Baccalaureate Degree and joint degrees.

The participating organisations decided to continue their dialogue by creating an e-mail list through which information on new developments can be disseminated. A second meeting was also agreed upon for 2007.
