Ownership: Statutory body, the Qualifications (Education and Training) Act of 1999.
Scope of Authority: Tertiary Institutions, legal successor to the National Council for Educational Awards, est. in 1972.
Agency's Role: Encourage, facilitate, co-ordinate and develop education outside the universities. Encourage and promote liberal education. Approve courses and confer awards.

Methods Used: Institutional review. Programmatic review. New course evaluation. National Quality review. Appointment of expert panels. Self-evaluation. Site visit. Surveys of users. Reporting by external examiners. Conference. Final public report.

Review Outcome: Full membership of HETAC was re-confirmed in Aug' 2006. Thus HETAC became the first Agency in the history of the European Quality Assurance whose Full Membership in ENQA was re-confirmed on the basis of the results from the external review of the Agency.
