A Nordic conference was organised by The Ministry of Education, Science and Culture in Iceland, Nordic Quality Assurance Network in Higher Education (NOQA) and The University of Iceland.

Background and Objectives
One of the globalisation initiatives of the Nordic Council of Ministers profiles the Nordic Region as a dynamic, international region in higher education. This task fits well within the recent developments of quality assurance in higher education in the Nordic countries. Stakeholders from higher education institutions and quality assurance agencies have strove to commit to the pioneering role of the Nordic region in quality assurance in higher education.

The conference aimed to bring together experts from Nordic higher education institutions and quality assurance agencies and to create a forum to discuss the quality of higher education in the Nordic countries and the methods used to ensure the quality of the higher education system. The conference focused on both past experiences and the future challenges that the Nordic higher education is facing with the fulfillment of the Bologna process and the realisation of the European Higher Education Area. Among the upcoming challenges are the globalisation of the higher education, the emergence of joint degrees and the implementation of learning outcomes.

The conference served as a common venue for the Nordic countries as well as a forum for the European higher education area in general to get together and discuss Nordic higher education and quality assurance.
