The European Association of Distance Teaching Universities (EADTU) organised, in cooperation with ENQA, a seminar on QA of e-learning in Madrid. The seminar was hosted by the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED).
Background
With the increased mobility of students, academic staff, as well as higher education providers, quality assurance in e-learning has become of great interest, as e-learning is a main instrument for generating cross border higher education.
At present the quality of e-learning in higher education is not yet an integral part of the current internal and external quality assurance systems. Therefore, ENQA and EADTU have decided to start collaborating on the subject of quality assurance in e-learning. This collaboration will aim to define and determine the elements of quality in e-learning as well as to develop new strategies and accreditation processes.
Goals of the seminar
The seminar was, for most participants, a first introduction to quality assurance in e-learning.
The first day focused on the concept of e-learning assessment in higher education and then further elaborated on the E-xcellence instrument and manual on e-learning benchmarking. The second day was dedicated to the preparation of the Local Seminars on institutional and external e-learning assessments that will take place in the 13 participating countries between September 2008 and February 2009.
